“Anxiety is a signal that one perceives some threat to one’s continued existence.” – Irvin Yalom, Existential Psychotherapy.
When you experience anxiety, the above statement is profound, terrifying, and filled with hope. Why? Because our continued existence is not defined or static; you are continuous and changing.
By focusing on the here-and-now experience and the depths of your anxiety you create meaning out of meaninglessness. Life is inherently meaningless; no one can live or experience life for you and we choose to create meaning in every moment.
When people tell you how to live, feel, and engage with the world a seed is planted that slowly grows into dread and unauthenticity. Which then presents itself as anxiety. This felt, lived, and dynamic anxiety is pulling you into this moment to change, create meaning, and find profound courage.
Find a safe, non-judgmental, and shared space in therapy to build a solid foundation of trust, acceptance, and realism. Engage your anxiety. Live your experience. Find your courage in meaning creation. You are doing amazing work.
