Finding Courage in Times of Existential Crisis

Feeling Lost? Here’s How to Accept Yourself Even When Life Feels Overwhelming

Graduating from college and stepping into the real world can be tough. Many people start having existential thoughts and feelings of not being good enough. It’s common to feel this way when things don’t go as planned, and you think you should be doing better.

Understanding Existential Dread

Existential dread happens when we start thinking deeply about our life and our place in the world. We become very aware of how limited our time is and feel pressure to make a big impact or leave a legacy. This can be overwhelming and cause a lot of anxiety.

Embrace Self-Acceptance

Rollo May, an important psychologist, said, “The courage to be is the courage to accept oneself, in spite of being unacceptable.” This means we need to find the courage to accept ourselves even when we feel like we’re failing.

How to Cope

Practice Self-Compassion: Understand that it’s okay to feel down sometimes. Life has ups and downs, and feeling low now doesn’t mean it will always be this way.

Mindfulness and Meditation: Spend 10 minutes each day practicing mindfulness or meditation. I know this can sound challenging; you feel like you are not doing it right; but try it you will be surprised how even 10 minutes can really help ground yourself in the moment.

Talk to someone close to you: You are not alone, and we are all in this together. We are all trying to find acceptance and compassion for ourselves even when we feel the most unacceptable. Share your story and seek to help others empower theirs as well.
