Balancing Independence and Dependence in Relationships

Are you able to recognize both your independence and dependence on your partner?

Part 1: Independence

Too much independence can change the relationship from growing together to becoming distant. In 2024, technology and social media can make this even harder. You see content made just for you, not for both of you as a couple.

Tip 1: Communicate Openly About Needs and Boundaries

Example: With remote work and constant digital communication, it’s important to set clear boundaries. Regularly talk with your partner about what you each need to feel supported and adjust as necessary.

“True intimacy requires each partner to be both an individual and a partner, finding a way to honor both the self and the relationship.” (Hollis, 2005)

Part 2: Dependence

Too much dependence can make you lose yourself, becoming overly reliant on your partner. This can lead to bigger problems in the future.

Tip 2: Pursue Individual and Shared Goals

Example: Encourage each other to follow personal interests while also setting common goals. Plan regular date nights or joint projects that interest both of you, helping balance independence and connection.

“We may spend much of our lives oscillating between dependence and independence, seeking the elusive balance between the two.” (Hollis, 2005)
