4 Questions to ask yourself if you feel anxious about going into therapy or going back to therapy.

When to start therapy? Where to start therapy? Starting therapy again?

  1. What do you want out of therapy?

Yes, you, what do you want out of therapy? You choose to come to therapy and you know what you want out of the experience. If you have not answered that question yet for yourself, that is okay, and you are not alone. Therapy builds over time and you will know what you want or it could change during the journey.

  • What makes you feel comfortable going into therapy?

You deserve a space that you feel comfortable. If there is a certain time of day you would like to meet, a day (start of the week or end of the week), doing the first session on video or going in-person, or even what you are wearing. You can do all these things to feel more comfortable in your experience.

  • How do you want therapy to go?

If you want to come to therapy and “spill the tea,” talk about life and then do a “doorknob confession,” or even come in with a list of things to talk about that is great! Create an experience that will lead to greater growth at your speed. Therapy is about you and what helps you to grow. Therapists have a lot of tools, but there is one you and that is important.

  • How is your connection to the therapist?

You will feel some level of connection right away with your new therapist. Be mindful of this connection and if you can continue to build that relationship. Through routine sessions and conversation, you can build rapport which feels really validating and healing.
